The Fate of Main Street is in Our Hands
Main Street in Downtown Commerce is in serious trouble. Like most small towns in America, years of economic decline has left Main Street in Commerce struggling to survive. 50 Years ago every square foot of Main Street was occupied by a store front. Today in 2025 almost half of those stores are now closed. And the future on Main Street looks even grimmer. Over half of the people downtown who own a business on Main Street are nearing or at retirement age. So in the next five to ten years, the number of store closed will almost certainly outnumber those open. Picture what Main Street in Commerce will look like 25 years from now. It will almost certain look like Main Street in neighboring Cooper, Ladonia, Wolfe City or Cumby. The writing is on the wall folks; once Main Street is gone; it’s gone forever. These are the facts about Main Street and they are indisputable. The question now becomes: can anything be done to save Main Street? The answer to that question will determine the fate of Main Street in Commerce forever.
